In life, there are days and moments where everything we do does not feel enough, or face situations that are beyond our control. A common response to such instances is to doubt ourselves and our abilities, and that is a very normal and human thing to do. But the effect of self-doubt can cut both ways: It can either spur us to achieve our goals and thereby boost our confidence levels, or cause us to feel entirely powerless and paralysed. Fortunately, whether we allow it to work for or against us is mostly up to us. In this issue, we will explore the ways in which we can harness self-doubt to build confidence -- one step at a time.

Moving from Self Doubt to Self Confidence

It would be nice if moving from self doubt to self confidence just came naturally. However, moving from self doubt to self confidence is a practice you can adopt, with practice. When you are able to identify where your insecurities lie and what is stopping you from feeling confident, you can then start the process of moving from self doubt to self confidence. You will be able to work on eliminating the blocks that are keeping you from moving through life with assuredness. Here are some of the culprits for the patterns of self doubt and ideas for what you can do about them.

Why confidence and knowledge can lead to smart money decisions

Two common areas that cause people to procrastinate financially are knowledge and confidence. Logically, we know that financial literacy can boost our confidence to make informed money-management decisions. Yet, many people tell me that they lack the confidence to learn and absorb that financial knowledge, which holds them back. However, everybody is capable of effectively managing their money. While some need mindset adjustments, others need a confidence boost or a little reassurance that they are on the right track. Take small steps, follow and when doubt starts to creep in, remind yourself that money is only a tool and you are learning.

Zahiraah (Project Executive)

I met Syamim because I felt the need to make smart money decisions and wanted to understand insurance and investing better. The financial calculations were beneficial and it helped me prioritise my money habits and understand the big ticket expenses in my near future. This experience was different compared to other financial advisors I met as not only did Syamim advised me on financial planning, he also helped me to visualise the steps required to reach the goals I have. He's professional, well informed and very friendly. He also advices beyond the point of his personal gains and instead focuses on his clients' gains. That extra mile is genuine. I would definitely refer to friends.

Aktar (Analyst)

I’ve known Syamim for about 10 years now. The biggest thing I appreciate about him as a financial planner is how he has never leveraged on our personal relationship to be pushy. Instead, he was extremely clear and detailed in his breakdown of what options were available to me. Syamim then tailored his recommendations to what fit my risk profile and financial goals. This built a good foundation of trust and confidence in him as a financial planner. Beyond this, we have had many exchanges which has aided me in both my professional and personal development. I cannot recommend him enough!

Rafii (Manager)

My encounter with Syamim was mere coincidence after we struck a conversation on personal finance. Syamim shared on his approach to financial planning which impressed me. After this encounter, I decided to to consult him for my financial planning. Syamim’s experience with diverse client pool and depth of knowledge is priceless and a cut above others. He is meticulous in his work and concise in his communication. As a busy working professional, Syamim is of great assistance. He works closely to set goals and formulate the most efficient and optimal solution with realistic and timely milestones. He proactively provide portfolio updates and market intels that can value add to my personal financial planning. I highly recommend others to have a consultation with Syamim. I am certain it will be worth your time and there will be valuable takeaways.

Sharon (Management Trainee)

I Met Syamim randomly because I signed up to get a personal finance booklet on IG. But best decision ever. “I wont advise you to invest until 6 months later, after we have tracked your cash flow” “There are more packages but I won’t sell those, cause they are really not worth. I can run through them but will refer you to someone else if you really want to buy.” “Me: I don’t really know how cpf and income tax works Syamim: *prepares an entire ppt and lecture to educate me” “Me: I have random insurance that my parents buy from different companies, but I don’t really know what they are. Syamim: *makes me send him screenshots from SingPass, pdfs from AXA and the GE app on my dad’s phone to find out what I have.” If those quotes weren’t enough, the final stroke for me was; “Syamim: *pulls out an excel sheet 10 mins into our first meeting to start calculating my cash flow and planning for things like holidays to marriage to dental appointments.” I have met more than 5 financial advisors, but all seemed to just want to “grow my wealth”. While that is important, I think understanding my wealth and giving me handles to manage it is much more important. At our age, really think financial literacy is the way to go. Syamim keeps up to date and is a really good teacher, even asked him if he considered being one. What he does is to give you the necessary knowledge to manage your own finances and make the most well informed decisions. Coming full circle, he is everything a financial advisor should be but usually isn’t - giving you good financial advise and lets you decide. What everyone else does is tell you how to grow your wealth, how to invest, how to beat inflation, another savings plan, another plan to diversify, or simply instilling some fear of the future to help you ‘invest’ early. So for all the lost souls and fresh graduates, Syamim is definitely the guy for you. I’ve actually never met anyone else who pulls out an excel sheet to plan my finances instead of drawing me some triangle, timeline or graph. He is open to teaching and advising those who already has insurance plans too, no strings attached!! So feel free to reach out. If you feel bad just get him a drink though he will probably tell you to wait till you gain enough income to buy him one :))

Prakash (Teacher)

Syamim took the time and effort to find out about me and my needs. Thus, he was able to make good recommendations. I learnt quite a bit on how to track my spending and budget accordingly with my savings and investments in mind in order to reach my personal financial milestones. He was very frank and was not pushy which made me very comfortable with him. I would recommend him to my friends.

Ainnie (Stage manager)

I choose Syamim after seeing my fiancé take charge of his finances and seeing him planning for the future inspires me to do the same. I personally like how Syamim personalized my financial plan without being pushy and he ensures that I am on track with my personal goals. As me and my fiancé are moving to the next chapter in our lives, I feel Syamim is the best person to really understand and plan for our finances towards financial freedom.
